DIY Kitchens - Appliances

When your worktops and cupboards have been fitted there’s only one thing left, the appliances. With the kitchen appliances there are a whole range of products, some fitter friendly and others not.

How to fit washing machine and dishwasher

Washing machines tend to be 595mm in width and between 840mm and 860mm in height. So ensure to leave the right amount of space when installing cupboard units and make sure your worktop’s height will accommodate the appliances.

When fitting your washing machine, consider having the plumbing services in the neighbouring cupboard. This prevents the washing machine from protruding. If the appliance is fitted next to your sink, you can integrate the waste pipe.

The electrical points can also be installed into the neighbouring cupboard and you’ll need to drill holes for plugs and wires.

Remember, for all freestanding appliances the flooring should be fitted prior to the appliance’s installation. You’ll then be able to slide the washing machine/dishwasher into place once it’s connected to the water and electrics.

Built under freestanding fridges/freezers

Installation of built under fridges/freezers is carried out much the same as above yet they vary in widths. Adding 5mm to the width of the appliance will leave sufficient space for fitting.

How to fit freestanding fridges and freezers

With your freestanding fridge or freezer, the installation will be practically the same as described above, except that the measurements will be slightly different. Add 5mm to your width to ensure a good fit.

This may sound obvious, but avoid fitting a fridge or freezer nearby to the oven. Many homeowners even install their fridges and freezers in a utility room or garage to save space in the kitchen. So if you’re short on room, then consider this option.

How to fit built in ovens

Once the oven has been connected to the electrics, you can simply slide in the appliance and screw to the cabinet gables.

Remember, if you’re fitting a gas oven, you need to have a Gas Safe Registered company take charge of the installation. It’s illegal for those not listed on the Gas Safe Register to fit gas appliances and without the knowhow you risk causing a major gas leak or even an explosion.
